What is Financial Connects?

Financial Connects is one of Net Literacy's five core programs. Net Literacy is a student-managed 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes youth philanthropy through a series of community outreach programs. The company's mission is to empower students to increase computer access by increasing computer access, computer and Internet literacy, and Internet safety awareness programs. At the same time, Net Literacy student volunteers learn life skills, job skills, and gain an opportunity to give back to their community, donating 100,000s of hours of service. Net Literacy has increased computer access to well over 100,000 individuals, its Internet safety awareness program has been viewed by 100,000s, and its programs have been recognized by our nation’s leadership, including Presidents Clinton and Bush.

Superintendent Dr. Bennett: A Net Literacy Hero

In March 2009, 24 students on Net Literacy's Board of Directors met with Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Tony Bennett. Dr. Bennett challenged the students to innovate novel service learning projects that would support the Indiana Department of Education’s goals of increasing student success. Net Literacy's student board responded - and successfully competed for a $98,000 grant from State Farm and State Farm's Youth Advisory Board. On February 22, 2009, State Farm Community Specialist Ed Perez presented the check to Net Literacy at the Indiana Department of Education. “I am proud that Net Literacy, an organization made of Indiana students, successfully competed for State Farm’s financial literacy grant. This is the type of service learning project that encourages student success, and I congratulate them on this endeavor,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett.

Indiana Rep. Greg Porter: A Net Literacy Hero

The Net Literacy student board is grateful for Representative Greg Porter’s leadership role helping to increase students’ financial literacy so that they can use this knowledge to live more productive and richer lives. Representative Porter, Chair of the Education Committee, sponsored a bill in the House, which helped result in schools teaching financial literacy to sixth grade through twelfth grade students. For his leadership and advocacy of youth and education, Net Literacy’s student board of directors declared Representative Greg Porter a “Net Literacy Hero” in July, 2009.
